The road goes on forever in push to make ‘Roadrunner’ Massachusetts’ official rock song (poll, video)

Boston music maven and mayoral adviser Joyce Linehan promises to continue her fight

Jonathan Richman (pictured above on Instagram with Lil BUB, the rockin’  Internet cat) says “Roadrunner,” the iconic Massachusetts anthem that may be the Modern Lovers founder’s best-known song, isn’t good enough be an official song of any kind for the Bay State.

And since the state legislature ended its session last Friday without taking action on a bill to make it the state’s official rock song, it looks like he’ll get his way — for now, at least.

But Joyce Linehan, policy adviser to Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, vows that the fight’s not over.

“Roadrunner might not be the official rock song of the Commonwealth, but it’s certainly the unofficial,” Linehan posted to her Facebook page Tuesday.

But she followed up Wednesday morning with a stronger statement in response to a tweet from comedian John Hodgman, who has supported the “Roadrunner” effort.

“John Hodgman has spoken. I will fight on,” she posted.

Walsh introduced the  bill to make “Roadrunner” the state rock song back in February 2013, before he won the mayoralty in Beantown and gave up his legislative seat.

Gone too soon: Vic Chesnutt dead at 45 (UPDATE: Donate to help Vic’s family)

UPDATE: Longtime Vic Chesnutt collaborator Kristin Hersh has set up a web page for donations to help Vic’s survivors. Click here to donate. Kristin promises that all proceeds will go to the family to help cover the costs of Vic’s hospitalization and burial.

Singer-songwriter Vic Chesnutt, 45, who was confined to a wheelchair after breaking his neck in a car accident at age 18, died today after lapsing into a coma after taking an overdose of muscle relaxants earlier this week, family spokesman, Jem Cohen told The New York Times.

Vic's energy came out in a howl.

Kristin Hersh, a frequent collaborator with Chesnutt, said on Twitter that it was suicide. “No one knows much: another suicide attempt, looks bad, coma–if he survives, there may be brain damage,” Hersh Tweeted yesterday. “This time, it’s real scary: *this* time, he left a note, *this* time, he asked them to call me.”

The Athens, Ga., -based performer, had attempted suicide in the past. But the lyrics of the songs on his new album, In the Cut, seemed to signal a positive outlook on life. He even wrote directly about suicide in “Flirted With You All My Life,” writing “Everywhere I go, you’re always right there with me. I flirted with you all my life. Even kissed you once or twice… But clearly I was not ready. … Oh death, really I’m not ready, no no.”

Vic opened for Jonathan Richman at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC in June. He seemed as cantankerous as ever and full of life. After his set, he hung out with some younger men at the back of the room and talked about partying after the show. He seemed content, not as angry or hurting as in the past. Perhaps he had just learned to hide it better.

R.I.P., Vic.

Jonathan Richman — night 2!

Here are a few shots, and a video, from Jonathan Richman‘s show on Wednesday night, June 17, at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC.

The energy level was distinctly different than the night before. Even Jonathan admitted toward the end of the show that something wasn’t right, something was missing. (Jonathan mixes up the set every  time he plays, and doesn’t use a set list.)

But he fixed it by playing “Springtime in New York” as his parting tune.

Here’s a video I shot of Jonathan performing “Girlfriend” at the show:

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Jonathan Richman‘s set at NYC’s Bowery Ballroom last night was so wonderful it left me virtually speechless. And Athens, Ga., legend Vic Chesnutt‘s opening set was revelatory, as well.

Vic C gets ready

Newsflash: Vic told the crowd last night that Jonathan had recently flown him to San Francisco, where Vic recorded his new album, with Jonathan and his drummer, Tommy Larkins, backing him up. “It went pretty well,” the paraplegic singer-songwriter said with a grin.

I’ll be back for tonight’s show, expecting something equally entertaining. You should be there too.
